Background of the Study

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are a vital part of the economy in Funtua LGA, contributing to job creation, economic growth, and poverty reduction. However, SMEs often face challenges in managing their financial resources effectively, which can affect their profitability and sustainability. Budgetary controls are essential tools for ensuring that financial resources are allocated appropriately and that spending aligns with the business’s financial goals. This study will investigate how budgetary controls can enhance the profitability of SMEs in Funtua LGA by ensuring effective cost management, reducing waste, and improving resource allocation.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of budgetary controls in improving financial management, many SMEs in Funtua LGA struggle with implementing effective budgeting practices. Some SMEs lack formal budgeting systems, leading to inefficiencies in resource allocation and increased operational costs. These challenges can undermine profitability and business growth. Research Hypothesis

  1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between budgetary controls and the profitability of SMEs in Funtua LGA.
  2. H₀: The use of budgetary controls does not improve the financial performance of SMEs in Funtua LGA.
  3. H₀: The challenges faced by SMEs in implementing budgetary controls do not significantly impact their profitability.
